Accessibility statement for Gedling Country Park website

This accessibility statement applies to the domain www.gedlingcountrypark.com.

This website is run by Gedling Borough Council. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and Voiceover)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

What we’ve done to improve accessibility

Since our last review we have:

  • Fixed issues with text zoom and reflow in the navigation menu, so links are no longer cut off at 200% or 400% zoom.
  • Removed autoplay video content on the homepage.
  • Improved colour contrast for links, buttons, headings and menu items across the site.
  • Added alternative text to images and the Gedling Borough Council logo link.
  • Improved keyboard navigation by adjusting focus styles and fixing header behaviour so focused elements are no longer hidden.
  • Increased the size and spacing of touch targets, including social media icons.
  • Updated footer links so they are visually identifiable without relying on colour alone.
  • Added descriptive titles to PDFs, images now have alternative text, and the content is tagged for screen readers.

Inaccessibility

We acknowledge that there are some parts of this website that are still not fully accessible:

  • The dropdown navigation menus cannot be dismissed without moving keyboard focus or pointer hover.
  • Content that appears when an element gets keyboard focus or on mouse hover may confuse users, as they may not have intended to trigger an action or may not notice that new content has appeared. This functionality may also not display correctly on mobile devices.
  • These issues are caused by the current framework used to host the site (WordPress).

Disproportionate Burden Assessment

  • After conducting an internal assessment, we have determined that resolving this issue at this time would impose a disproportionate burden on the Council. This assessment is based on the following considerations:
  • Cost implications: The current website infrastructure does not support the necessary technical changes without a full redevelopment. Implementing these changes would require significant investment in new frameworks, developer time and resources.
  • Planned replacement: A new Gedling Country Park website is scheduled to be developed and launched by the end of the 2025/2026 financial year, which will be designed to meet full WCAG 2.2 AA compliance, including criterion 1.4.13.
  • Usage data: Our Google analytics tool does not show how many visitors to the website use accessibility tools on the Gedling Country Park website, but we can review total visitor’s statistics. The Gedling Country Park website has an average of 17,000 visitors in the last year (24/25), compared to 293,000 annual visitors to the Gedling Borough Council website.  Total visitors to the Gedling Country Park website represent less than 5.8% of Gedling Borough Council traffic, it is likely that a small number of these visitors are using screen readers.  Whilst not insignificant, the affected functionality has minimal impact on the majority of users, and alternative navigation methods are available.
  • We will continue to monitor accessibility issues and ensure that the new website addresses all known barriers. In the meantime, if you require assistance accessing any content or functionality, please contact us using the details below.
